Massacre, also called Jallianwallah Bagh
massacre Punjab 1919, when British troops
under General Edward Dyer (1864- 1927)
opened fire without warning on a crowd of
some 10,000, assembled to protest against the
arrest of two Indian National Congress
leaders (see Congress Party). Dyer was
subsequently censured and resigned his
commission, but gained popular support in the
UK for his action, both by mention in the
House of Lords and by private subscriptions
totalling 926,000. The favourable treatment
Dyer received spurred Mahatma Gandhi to a
policy of active noncooperation with the
British.
